Eagles fall to Pioneers

WINCHESTER, VA- For the second season in a row the Millbrook Pioneers handed Clarke County their first loss of the season.

Running back Savon Smith led the way rushing for 303 yards and 4 touchdowns in a 34-14 win over the Eagles.

"We knew coming in it was going to be a tough four quarter game." Eagles quarterback Chris Davis said, "The best thing for us to do is forget this game and focus on next week."

Clarke County (1-1) drew first blood when running back Hunter Rogers went in on a 1 yard run midway through the second quarter. The Eagles defense held Millbrook in check until two fumbles led to two Pioneer touchdowns in the last 1:20 on the first half.

"The two fumbles hurt us, we've got to work that out." Rogers said, "I think this game will only make us better." Rogers finished the night with 90 yards on 21 carries to lead the Eagles rushing attack.

Smith broke a 40 yard run in the third quarter to give Millbrook (3-0) a 21 -7 lead and made it an uphill battle for the Eagles on a very hot and humid night.

Davis, 15 carries for 77 yards scored on a 13 yard run early in the fourth quarter to pull Clarke within 7 but Millbrook answered with two more scores by Smith on runs of 57 and 77 yards to ice the game.

Millbrook's P.K. Kier rushed for 27 yards on 13 carries and Clarke's Jordan Braithwaite added 77 yards on 15 carries.

Noah Robinson connected with Cameron Faint on a 13 yard touchdown pass to put Millbrook up 14-7 with one second to go in the first half.

"Very hard fought game, their [Millbrook] a very good team." Eagles coach Chris Parker said. "They have a lot of speed and gifted runners, and we didn't protect the ball. It was a hard fought battle and I expect them [Millbrook]  to go very deep in the playoffs.

The Eagles open their home season Friday night at Wilbur M. Feltner Stadium in Berryville as they host the Handley Judges in the Clarke County High School Sports Hall of Fame Game. Kickoff is set for 7:30PM.
