The Northern Valley Football Wrap Up (Week 1) with Moe Murphy

Bluemont, Va.- The 2015 High School Football season kicked off this past weekend and there was no lack of action in the Northern Shenandoah Valley.
The Clarke County Sports Game of the Week featured the James Wood Colonels (0-1, 0-0) out of the Northwestern District facing the Heritage Pride(1-0, 0-1) in Loudoun County's Dulles District.

Heritage used a combination of blinding speed, pin point execution and a little trickery to defeat James Wood 55-21.

Long time Millbrook coach, Reed Prosser was pleased with his teams performance.

"I was real excited how we played offensively," Heritage Coach Reed said, "the kids did a good job playing hard, executing, we knew we were going to be exposive on offense and just really proud of the effort the kids gave tonight."

Heritage Quarterback Alex Carlin was 8 for 13 for 237 yards and 5 touchdowns. Carlin also rushed for a 30 yard touchdown.

James Wood running back Tyler Bishop rushed for 288 yards and scored twice on runs of 8, and 85 yards.

"We gave up a lot of trick type plays, onside kicks and those things early.The thing we learned is that we can run the ball," James Wood Coach McHale said."

The Sherando Warriors (1-0, 0-0) from the Northwestern District traveled to Louisa County (0-1, 0-0) from the Jefferson District and came away with a 35-7 victory. It looks as if Warrior Coach Bill Hall had another successful summer as the Warriors opened on the road with a strong opponent and won in impressive fashion.

Warrior quarterback Patrick Minteer was 5 of 11 for 134 yards including a 72 yard touchdown to Dylan Rivers. Rivers had 121 yards receiving also scored on a 2 yard run and scored a two point conversion.

Warrior running back back D.J. Myers had 3 scores on the ground with runs of 38, 9, and 49.

The Handley Judges (0-1, 0-0) out of the Northwestern District (0-1, 0-0) lost a close battle to the Warren County Wildcats (1-0, 0-0) from the Bull Run District 27-17.

Warren County quarterback Robert Rutherford passed for a 10 yard touchdown and rushed 68 yards for another score in the win. Rutherford was on the money all night going 13 of 14 for 115 yards.

Cam Ford had 10 receptions for 82 yards for Warren County. Daniel Spangler returned a fumble for an 80 yard touchdown.

Jacob Shade had 98 yards on 8 carries for Handley. Chris Moten scored on a 57 yard run to give the Judges the early lead.

The Millbrook Pioneers (0-1, 0-0) of the Northwestern District traveled over state lines to play the Jefferson Cougars (1-0, 0-0) of the Eastern Panhandle Athletic Conference and fell 25-13.

James King replaced an injured Isaac Myers at quarterback for the Cougars and rushed for two scores on runs of 9 and 5 yards. King rushed for 116 yards on 14 carries.

Christian Johnson returned a kick off 85 yards for a Cougar score.

Millbrook quarterback Mark Paxton had touchdown passes of 39, and 43 yards, but was picked three times by the Cougar defense.

The Washington Patriots (1-0, 1-0) defeated rival the Hedgesville Eagles (0-1, 0-1) scoring an impressive 59-0 shutout in the Eastern Panhandle Athletic Conference matchup.

Quarterback Chase MacCubbin accounted for five touchdowns passing for 3 and rushing for 2. MacCubbin was 11 of 14 for 267 yards and connected on touchdowns of 24, 37, and 67 yards, and scored on runs of 22 and 6 yards.

Jonathan McFarlane grabbed 5 receptions for 164 yards including 2 touchdowns of 37 and 67 yards. Gavin MacCubbin also hauled in 5 passes for 88 yards including a 24 yard touchdown.

P.J. Bowlin led the Patriots rushing with 66 yards on 8 carries including a 17 yard touchdown.

Kicker Stephen Groh was 8 of 8 on PAT's and had a 37 yard field goal.

The Strasburg Rams (1-0, 0-0) of the Bull Run District defeated the Stonewall Jackson Generals (0-1, 0-0) of the Shenandoah District 29-6. 

The Skyline Hawks (1-0, 0-1) of the Northwestern District defeated the Central Falcons (0-1, 0-0) of the Bull Run District 28-27.

The Clarke County Eagles did not play last week and open their 2015 season at home against Manassas Park Cougars, kick off is set for 7:30.
