Heritage opens strong with win against James Wood

LEESBURG, Va.- The Heritage Pride wasted no time Friday night coming out of  the gates on the first play from scrimmage with a touchdown agaisnt James Wood.

Heritage quarterback Alex Carlin threw five touchdown passes and ran for one in a 55-21 victory on the Clarke County Sports Game of the Week.

"I was real excited how we played offensively," Heritage Coach Reed said, "the kids did a good job playing hard, executing, we knew we were going to be exposive on offense and just really proud of the effort the kids gave tonight."

The Pride managed to get 15 points on the board before the Colonels offense touched the ball.

After the opening kickoff Carlin hit Cole Miller in stride for a 76 yard touchdown pass and after the kick failed, the Pride recovered an onside kick and got their second score of the first quarter on a 44 yard scamper from Mitch Westbrook and the point after gave Heritage a 15 point lead just over one minute into the game.

"We gave up a lot of trick type plays, onside kicks and those things early.The thing we learned is that we can run the ball," James Wood Coach McHale said. "We've got to figure out our defense and adjust that and I think we will be alright."

Colonel running back Tyler Bishop rushed for 288 yards and two touchdowns for the Colonels before leaving the game early in the fourth quarter. Bishop scored on runs of 8 and 85 yards.

Carlin used a variety of weapons speading his five touchdowns among four receivers. Carlin hit Cole Miller on passes of 76 and 20, Andrew Sylvain for 15, Tyrique Moss for 85, and Mitch Westbrook for 85 yards.

"We like to spread the wealth around here at Heritage," Carlin said. "We like to get everybody in the mix and feeling better, everyone's a part of the team."

Westbook scored two times on the the ground with runs of 44 and 5. Carlin scored the Pride's only touchdown of the second half on a 30 yard run.

James Wood's other score came on a one yard plunge from running back Keegan DeHaven.
