Eagles remain undefeated as McDonald breaks school passing record

BERRYVILLE, Va- The Clarke County Eagles moved their unbeaten record to 8-0 with a 48-14 win over the Manassas Park Cougars at Wilbur M. Feltner Stadium on Senior night.

Senior QB Sean McDonald hooked up with his brother Brett on the first play from scrimmage to break the school passing yardage record and PA Announcer Tommy Cain made the announcement and the game was stopped briefly as former record holder Duane Clarke along with former Eagle Coach Don Specht congratulated McDonald as did his parents.

"It's hard to put it into words," Eagles Coach Chris Parker said. "Sean is one of the hardest working young man I have coached in 32 years. The fact that he completed the pass to his brother Brett makes it even more special. They will always have something to talk about."

The Eagles wasted no time putting this one away as they led 41-0 at the half with six different Eagles finding the end-zone and the Eagles defense yielded nothing in the first half and had several turnovers. Bryan Wallace was a virtual one man wrecking crew as seen in the Game of the Week.

Jordan Turner made his return to action and scored on a 5 yard run. Also scoring in the first half  wee Sean McDonald (1 yd run), Vince Zdouba 4 yd td from Sean  McDonald, Justin Dulaney 18 yd td from McDonald, Hunter Rogers (2 yd run), and Jaxon Ottobre (1 yd run), Levi Mayo was 5 of 5 on P.A.T. with one failed P.A.T. pass attempt by McDonald.

The Eagles scored one more time in the second half as Chris Keim went in from 1 yd out. Manassas Park got on the board with a James Duvall (1 yd run) and Jonathan Bunner (1 yd run). Jose Alfaro was 2 of 2 on P.A.T.

Vince Zdouba received the Malloy Ford Unsung Hero award and Chris Sefton was the Malloy Ford Halftime Field Goal Champion.

The Eagles finished their regular home season and will the end the season on the road with games at George Mason on Oct. 31, and William Monroe Nov. 7.

Clarke County Sports will follow the Eagles as long as they remain alive in the Playoffs. #CLARKESTRONG

Q's Huddle Buzz - Vol. 3 No. 8

WINCHESTER, Va. – Sophomore Qlyl Middelijn is in his first year as the blogger for the football team. This week, Q recaps a milestone victory for the program.
I have been a member of this program for two years now, just as long as Coach Yoder has been our head coach, and we finally won two consecutive games in a row with our win Saturday at Catholic and it feels great.  Earlier in the week, as we prepared to play Catholic, coach asked us if anyone on this team has won two games in a row and everyone remained silent.
#18 Qlyl Middelijn
That silence put the utmost certainty that we will we do anything we have to do to win and that was the exact result. We came out with a 24-14 victory.
Its Homecoming week and we play No. 24 Hampden-Sydney tomorrow at 1. Why wouldn't we schedule one of the best, if not the best team, in the conference to play on homecoming? To be the best, you have to beat the best.
Hampden-Sydney is one tough opponent. As soon as the Catholic game was over our attention was immediately on the Tigers. Homecoming week can definitely cause a lot of outside distractions and that is not something we want to focus on. Our focus is striving to be the best team in the ODAC and earning that NCAA playoff berth.
It starts with us, nobody else. If every player does his part, there is no way we can lose.
We are a very good team when every player is performing his job and executing to the best of their capabilities. Come out and support your Hornets to#18

Shenandoah outlasts Catholic by SU Athletic Department

WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Shenandoah University football team has started its first-ever winning streak of the Yoder era thanks to a 24-14 ODAC victory at Catholic University of America Saturday afternoon.
The win also matches the 2013 win total for Shenandoah (4-2, 2-1 ODAC).
The Hornets led 14-0 at the break and 21-0 late in the third quarter when Catholic (2-4, 0-3) took advantage of a Drew Ferguson fumble in the Cardinals end zone.
Ferguson, who appeared to be down and reaching for the goalline, coughed the ball up where CUA defensive back Richard Roach scooped it up and raced 100-yards for the hosts initial score of the contest.
Catholic then brought itself within seven points by taking just three plays and 33 seconds to drive for its second score.
Now in a dog fight, Shenandoah responded with a 12-play, 43-yard drive that ended with a 29-yard Jacob Newton field goal with 2:33 remaining to give the victors the 24-14 lead.
CUA was able to drive into SU territory on its ensuing drive, but turned the ball over on downs and the Hornets ran out the clock on their final possession of the contest.
#13 Cedrick Delaney
Sophomore Cedrick Delaney, who cracked the 100-yard barrier for the fifth straight game, led the Shenandoah offense with 23 carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns.
He had a 34-yard TD in the second quarter and a 19-yard run in the third.
Ferguson was 19 for 27 for 158 yards through the air to help the Hornets to 372 yards in total offense.
The SU defense held Catholic to 124 yards passing and picked off CUA quarterback TJ Tutone one time.
Linebackers Michael Messick and Micheal Wroble each had 11 stops for the Shenandoah defense.
Kye Hopkins had the remaining TD for the Hornets, blasting over from the 3 at the 6:42 mark of the first that gave SU the lead for good.
Shenandoah welcomes No. 25 Hampden-Sydney to Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium next Saturday for a 1:00 homecoming contest

Washington Redskins Quotes and Injury Report

October 17, 2014
Redskins Park

Head Coach Jay Gruden

On the injury report:
"Ryan Clark was limited today - he is questionable. Akeem Jordan and Tracy Porter
are both out... Trent [Williams] was full today... David Amerson was full today - he
is questionable. Limited was Robert Griffin - he is out. Limited was Perry Riley -
he is questionable. Full was [Brian] Orakpo, Trenton Robinson and Darrel Young - all
three of those are probable."

On what cornerback David Amerson has to do to be ready for Sunday:
"That's up to the trainers and the doctors with the concussion protocol. Obviously
we take the concussions very seriously. We want to see him run around out there,
make sure there are no repercussions whatsoever and make sure he gets fully cleared.
Everything is on a positive track for him to play but I just want to make sure he
has got everything right about him."

On if there is anything to update regarding quarterback Robert Griffin III's status:
"No, nothing really to update. He is just doing what he is doing. He took a few more
reps today in the team periods, handing off and things of that nature and just
slowly but surely getting back into the flow. His progress will be up to the
trainers and the doctors moving forward."

On what Griffin III did in team drills:
"He did a couple scout team plays, just handing off - getting out of there."

On if wide receiver Leonard Hankerson or defensive end Stephen Bowen will play on
Sunday:
"That is a good question. We are not sure yet... Obviously, both of them look pretty
good. I think Bowen is probably a little bit more ready if he were to go. Hankerson,
probably we just need to see him a little bit more and make sure - because this is
the first time he has practiced with me, with our new system. So we just want to
make sure he has everything down before he goes - probably another week or two,
maybe."

On the progress of nose tackle Barry Cofield, Jr.:
"He is making good progress. Everything I have heard from Larry [Hess] in the
training room is he is doing a good job and coming along at a good pace. We
anticipate when he is eligible to come off he will be ready to go."

On the Titans' defense:
"What stands out about their defense? Well, they've got good players obviously. They
have got a good scheme. I know Coach [Ray] Horton. I've gone against him when he was
at Cleveland last couple years obviously. They do a lot of good things defensively.
[Jurrell] Casey is a load up there in the middle. [Derrick] Morgan is a good pass
rusher. They've got a good pass rush. In the back end [Jason] McCourty is playing
very well. They just have got a good all-around team defense. They mix up their
coverages. They're not overly complicated, but they do a good job playing their
defense and playing very sound football. So, it'll be a good challenge as every week
is."

On preparing for multiple quarterbacks:
"You'll have a little bit different game plan for each one. [Jake] Locker obviously
has more movement skills. He's a very good runner - very fast, very physical, not
afraid to lower his shoulder and run people over. You have to be a little bit more
aware of him in the running as far as scrambling. There might be some calls you
don't call against Locker that you would maybe, possibly call against [Charlie]
Whitehurst. So, we'll keep a close eye on it obviously. We won't know until an hour
before the game who's playing, but it will have some effect on the calls that the
defense makes - very minimal, but some."

On if linebacker Will Compton has practiced with the first-team defense this week:
"Yes. Perry [Riley] has been limited. Will's taken all the reps with the first team."

On the reason for practicing indoors:
"Yeah, the field doesn't hold water too well. Too wet."

Having a winning record is always a beautiful aspect of playing intercollegiate athletics. The Hornets came out strong last weekend against Guilford, giving the Quakers their first loss of the season. The kick return touchdown from Dieon DuPont to start the game set the momentum for the rest of the contest. We never let up, not one bit, and remained on top of their throats in the 47-31 victory.
Although we beat a tough opponent, we can't rest because every opponent we play for the rest of the season has to be viewed as a tough opponent. In the words of our wide receivers coach, Nick Oakley, tomorrow's game against Catholic is the most important game because it's the game we have this week.
We haven't won two consecutive games since coach Yoder took over, and we want that to change this week.
Catholic comes into the game with a 2-3 record and is 0-2 in the ODAC, but when we compete against the Cardinals we cannot go into it assuming it will be an easy win. Right now we are in the same situation as we were a few weeks ago after we beat Ferrum. We automatically assumed Bridgewater was going to be an easy game, and of course, it wasn't.
Our mindsets are different now. We are not the same team we was a few weeks ago, we are better, and we will continue to improve our skills and knowledge of our opponent in order to grab another W for our record.
Go Hornets!

Clarke County Eagles 2014 Homecoming Complete Halftime Ceremony

BERRYVILLE,Va.- The Clarke County High School 2014 Homecoming was held Friday October 10, 2014 at Wilbur M. Feltner Stadium. Clarke County Sports videographer Moe Murphy was on hand to capture the halftime ceremony.

Mr. Tommy Cain, "Voice of the Felt" is the commentator. Congratulations to seniors Justin Dulaney and Jessie Anbrosio for being selected the King and Queen of 2014.

This Week in SU Sports by Shenandoah Athletic Department

Two home contests against Bridgewater highlight the week.
Field Hockey (9-4, 4-0 ODAC): The field hockey team, winners of seven straight, can clinch a first round bye at the upcoming ODAC Tournament with wins over Bridgewater on Tuesday and at Lynchburg Friday. The Eagles and Hornets are two of the three teams picked ahead of SU in the pre-season poll, but Shenandoah now is the league co-leader at 4-0 and has the best overall record in the conference.
Last season, BC defeated SU in overtime while LC was a 5-0 victor in the conference opener for both schools.
Women's Soccer (5-8-1, 5-3 ODAC): Women's soccer is at home twice this week, on Wednesday at 7 versus Bridgewater and on Saturday at 2 versus Emory and Henry.
The Bridgewater series has been as close as they come - Shenandoah is 2-1-3 against the Eagles dating back to 2008 and all three of the decided contests have been by one goal.
Shenandoah was a 1-0 winner at Bridgewater last season thanks to a Danielle Burris goal.
Emory and Henry tied SU 0-0 in a game played through a driving rainstorm last season despite the Hornets putting 11 shots on goal.
Men's Soccer (4-9, 1-5 ODAC): The men's soccer team opens up Wednesday's doubleheader on the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium turf with a 4 p.m. contest against Washington and Lee.
One week ago, Shenandoah snapped a 17-match ODAC losing streak with a 2-1 victory at Bridgewater.
The Hornets will look to make it two of three as they host the 8-3, 3-3 Generals. Last season, W&L was a 3-0 winner in an October 9 contest played in Lexington.
SU finishes the week with a 6 p.m. game at Guilford Saturday evening.
Football (3-2, 1-1 ODAC): The football team, fresh off of a 47-31 victory over Guilford, travels to Catholic for a 1 p.m. Saturday contest.
SU will be seeking to match the 2013 win total with a win over the Cardinals in the 11th lifetime gridiron matchup between the two schools.
CUA, 2-3 and 0-2 in the ODAC, defeated Shenandoah 37-7 last season.
Cross Country: The men's and women's cross country teams have their final regular season meets of the season this Saturday at the Gettysburg Invitational.
Following these races, both squads will be off until competing at the ODAC Championships on November 1 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Volleyball (13-8, 3-3 ODAC): The volleyball team, which opened the week with a 3-0 non-league home win over Penn State - Mont Alto Monday night, takes to the road this weekend for ODAC matches at Randolph-Macon Friday and Virginia Wesleyan Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets, at 6-0, are tied for first in the league with VWC just one match back at 5-1.

Game of the Week Shenandoah University 47 Guilford College 31

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University earned its first-ever football victory over Guilford College Saturday afternoon with a 47-31 ODAC win over the Quakers on the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium turf.
Shenandoah (3-2, 1-1 ODAC) picked off Guilford quarterback Matt Pawlowski three times in the contest, including two that were run back for touchdowns.
The Hornets led for all but 14 seconds of the contest as freshman Dieon DuPont returned the opening kick 92 yards for the hosts' initial score of the game.
The TD via kick return is just the second in program history and the first since BJ Smoot turned the trick versus Ferrum on September 27, 2008.
The Quakers (4-1, 1-1) were forced to punt on their first possession after gaining one first down (thanks to an SU pass interference penalty) and Shenandoah needed just six plays and 99 seconds to drive 69 yards to put itself up 15-0 by the 10:13 mark of the first.
Another short GC drive (six plays) that ended with a 20-yard punt led to the Hornets third score of the opening quarter.
It was sophomore Cedrick Delaney's turn on this drive as he finished off a seven-play, 64-yard drive with a 23-yard scamper around left end.
The game was not 10 minutes old and Shenandoah had a 22-0 lead.
Guilford answered with the initial two scores of the second quarter, a 39-yard Tyler Hunt FG and a Josh Jurgevich 1-yard run, before SU closed out the half by seeing freshman Jacob Newton nail a 44-yard field goal at the 6:27 mark.

Redskin Coach Jay Gruden Quotes

October 10, 2014
Redskins Park

Head Coach Jay Gruden

On the injury report:
"Robert Griffin and Tracy Porter are both out. Questionable and did not participate
today is Ryan Clark. Limited participation/questionable is Brian Orakpo.
Questionable - Perry Riley. He did not participate today. Trent Williams -
questionable, he did limited work today. And Jordan Reed did limited today and he is
questionable. Then the probables are all the others. Ryan Clark, did I say him? He
did not participate today but he is questionable."

On his level of concern about safety Ryan Clark and linebacker Perry Riley, Jr.:
"When you don't participate all week in practice, there's a lot of concern. Ryan
Clark has been around football a long time. His level of concern if he feels like he
can go is not quite as great as Perry's, but we'll have to see where they are
tomorrow."

On if the additional tests on Riley, Jr. revealed anything:
"No, no. He just has a sprained deal. It's just a matter of getting the soreness out
and how good he is."

On if he gives Clark "a looser rope" when it comes to recovery:
"Yeah, that's the case with a veteran guy like that who's been around, no question
about it. He knows his body better than I know his body. If he needs to take an
extra day, he's the type of guy that I know is not trying to cut corners. He's doing
it legitimately because he has some pain issue, and if he feels like he needs
another day of rest to get ready for Sunday, yes, I can deal with it."

On tight end Jordan Reed's performance:
"Yeah, he's done a pretty decent job. He's still not quite there yet but he's making
great progress. We're all anxiously awaiting his return and hopefully it will be
Sunday. But, like I said before, the most important thing is to make sure he feels
good about his hamstring so he can really run. We don't want 50 percent Jordan Reed.
We need 100 percent Jordan Reed."

On if Reed can be 100 percent by Sunday:
"Yeah, we'll see tomorrow. We'll get on the plane and see how he's doing after the
plane. We'll have a little jog through tomorrow to see where he's at. We'll probably
make the final decision probably after pregame warm-up, right around there when he's
out there at the stadium - let him run around, see how he looks."

On if Reed can help in the running game:
"He's a heck of a tight end. He's going to help us in all phases if he's ready to
go. We've got to cross our fingers, hope he's ready to go. The same with Ryan Clark,
[Brian] Orakpo and Trent Williams. All of these guys are very valuable to us, and
Jordan is no different. Jordan gives us another dimension with the passing game and
obviously he's good enough in the running game so he's a duel-threat. It just adds
to the mix. They have great corners out there with [Antonio] Cromartie and obviously
Patrick Peterson so it's a matchup we could utilize if he's ready to go."

Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation names High School Football Coach of the Week

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that head football coach Kyle Simmons of Westfield High School in Chantilly, Va. has been named the Redskins High School Coach of the Week for the week of Oct. 6.

Simmons has coached at Westfield High School since its opening in 2000, leading the team to two state championship titles as the defensive coordinator in 2003 and 2007. Now in his fourth season as head coach, Simmons maintains a 40-6 overall record. Prior to the start of the 2014 season, Simmons was diagnosed with cancer in his lymph nodes, but despite his hardship, has led the Bulldogs to a 4-1 record so far this season.

Terri Towle, Director of Student Activities at Westfield High School, attests that Simmons has displayed a resilient attitude throughout this season.

“Despite the news that Coach Simmons received this season, he hasn’t missed a beat,” said Towle. “He remains positive and continues to be an amazing role model for his players.”  .

At a recent home game, Simmons’ Bulldogs participated in Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month by collecting hats for an organization called Ellie’s Hats. Through this organization, the hats collected were donated to local children battling pediatric cancer.

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the team will also take part in the Friday Night Lights: THINK PINK!® initiative, a new partnership between the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and six Fairfax County high schools designed to promote breast cancer awareness and the importance of early detection at the high school level. Westfield’s matchup against Herndon High School on Oct. 24 will feature pink gear and stadium equipment from the Redskins’ Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Monday, Oct. 6 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Redskins High School Coach of the Week

The Redskins High School Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school football coaching.

Each week during the 2014 high school football season, the Redskins will select one area high school head football coach as the Redskins High School Coach of the Week. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment toward promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, overall community involvement and overall team performance and record.

Each of the coaches chosen throughout the high school season will receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Youth Football Fund to their football program and a framed certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins Head Coach Jay Gruden and Redskins President and General Manager Bruce Allen.
