LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that head football coach Kyle Simmons of Westfield High School in Chantilly, Va. has been named the Redskins High School Coach of the Week for the week of Oct. 6.
Simmons has coached at Westfield High School since its opening in 2000, leading the team to two state championship titles as the defensive coordinator in 2003 and 2007. Now in his fourth season as head coach, Simmons maintains a 40-6 overall record. Prior to the start of the 2014 season, Simmons was diagnosed with cancer in his lymph nodes, but despite his hardship, has led the Bulldogs to a 4-1 record so far this season.
Terri Towle, Director of Student Activities at Westfield High School, attests that Simmons has displayed a resilient attitude throughout this season.
“Despite the news that Coach Simmons received this season, he hasn’t missed a beat,” said Towle. “He remains positive and continues to be an amazing role model for his players.” .
At a recent home game, Simmons’ Bulldogs participated in Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month by collecting hats for an organization called Ellie’s Hats. Through this organization, the hats collected were donated to local children battling pediatric cancer.
In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the team will also take part in the Friday Night Lights: THINK PINK!® initiative, a new partnership between the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and six Fairfax County high schools designed to promote breast cancer awareness and the importance of early detection at the high school level. Westfield’s matchup against Herndon High School on Oct. 24 will feature pink gear and stadium equipment from the Redskins’ Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Monday, Oct. 6 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Redskins High School Coach of the Week
The Redskins High School Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school football coaching.
Each week during the 2014 high school football season, the Redskins will select one area high school head football coach as the Redskins High School Coach of the Week. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment toward promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, overall community involvement and overall team performance and record.
Each of the coaches chosen throughout the high school season will receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Youth Football Fund to their football program and a framed certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins Head Coach Jay Gruden and Redskins President and General Manager Bruce Allen.
