Ben Wallace captured the VHSL A 170 pound championship before a standing room only crowd at the Salem Civic Center. Wallace scored a 9-4 decision over Logan Dean of John I. Burton.

"You couldn't ask for anything better." Wallace said, "We could of brought a couple more kids down but we have a young team and there is always next year."

Ryan Huff grabbed the VHSL A 285 pound championship pinning Danny Cook of Castlewood at 2:33. Huff had 3 pins in 4 matches at the tournament.

"My coach told me to just be real aggressive with him and thats my style." Huff said, "I was on my back twice and thought I was going to have to fight him off. He didn't get his hip set and I just rolled him."

The Eagles grabbed seventh place with only three wrestlers competing in Salem. Senior Brandon Hutchison placed fifth in the 132 pound group to help the Eagles gain 67.5 points.

"To come down here and do that with only three guys is amazing." Eagles coach Jon VanSice said, "You look at all the guys around us, all these other teams are bringing six, seven, eight, nine guys and were right there with them."

The Loudoun County Raiders made a valiant surge but came up just short of winning the team title at the Region II Wrestling Championships Feb. 9 at John Champe High School in Aldie.

The Raiders tied Skyline for second place with 144.5 points, just three points short of Fauquier, who took the lead for good when Max Strum defeated Kettle Run’s Adam Bresson in the 185-pound championship bout.
“Our guys wrestled tough today,” Raiders coach Joel Caruso said. “We got the bonus points, we just came up three points short on the team totals. We are taking six to the states but should be taking eight.”

Six Loudoun wrestlers advanced to the finals with three making it all the way through to the champion’s podium.

Briar Woods junior Michael Hulcher won a 7-5 decision over Kettle Run’s Caleb Yost in the final at 126 pounds.

“It was great because it was the first time Briar Woods has ever had a regional champ,” Hulcher said. “I had wrestled the kid before in a tournament at the beginning of the season so I had a game plan coming into the tournament. I knew once I got the first takedown there was no way I was going to lose.”

ALDIE, VA-(2/9/13) The Loudoun County Raiders continued to be one of the top wrestling teams in AA wrestling as they finished tied for second with Skyline and falling 3 points short of Fauquer County at the Region II Championships held Friday and Saturday at John Champe High School.

The Raiders had one individual champion as senior captain Logan Smith pinned Kyle Vangel of Sherando at 1:10. With the pin Smith picked up his 150th career victory.

“I knew I had 149 wins going into the match, so it was really special to get a pin,” Smith said. “I knew if I got a pin and we got some help we could win the tournament. I loosened him up a little bit, turned him on his back and pinned him.”

"We wrestled tough today." Raiders coach Joel Caruso said, "We are sending six, we should be sending eight, it was a tough day."

Kyle Schlue made it to the final round but lost a tough match to Skyline's Justin Williams with a fall at 3:27.

Six Raiders made it to Salem. Joining Smith and Schlue will be Luke Rivera (145), Hunter Day (160), Mitchell Stevens (170) and Alex Reader (182).

Two other Raiders narrowly missed a ticket to Salem when they finished in fifth place. Senior Matt Sun (126) lost a controversial decision to Fauquier's Garrett Tingen 5-4 and Brian Munroy lost by fall to Syline's Caleb VanDoren at 5:20.

Cassada-Maple career ended short by injury

By Michael "Moe" Murphy

Josh Cassada-Maple is consoled by coach Troy Mezzatesta after a career ending
injury Friday night at the Region II wrestling tournament at John Champe High
School in Aldie. Cassada-Maple was ranked among the top wrestlers in the state at
170 pounds.                   Photo by Michael "Moe" Murphy / Clarke County Sports
ALDIE, VA- Josh Cassada-Maple’s storied wrestling career ended one week early as the 170 pound senior dislocated his shoulder in his first round match against Liberty’s Rico Bumbrey in the first round of the Region II tournament at John Champe High School in Aldie.

“Josh extended his arm and it appeared to get caught in the mat."Viking Coach Troy Mezzatesta said. “I heard Josh make a noise and then a loud yell. It’s a tough way to end a career that began in the third grade.”
Cassada-Maple was visibly distraught as Mezzatesta consoled him before he left the gym to receive medical attention.
Mezzatesta confirmed after returning with the team that Cassada-Maple had torn ligaments in the ac joint.
The acromioclavicular joint is located at the top of the shoulder where the acromion process and the clavicle meet to form a joint. Several ligaments surround this joint, and depending on the severity of the injury, a person may tear one or all of the ligaments. Torn ligaments lead to acromioclavicular joint sprains and separations.[1]
“Josh had a moment with his mom, who has supported her son through his career since he began wrestling in the third grade.”Mezzatesta said,  “It was a very emotional night for the team and Josh told me to tell the team to go out and kick some butt.”
The second day of the tournament starts at 10:00AM and gates open at 9:00AM for the event. Finals are scheduled for 5:00PM
