Remembering Sean Taylor 5 years later by Moe Murphy

Sean Michael Maurice Taylor (April 1, 1983 – November 27, 2007) was an American college and professional football player who was a free safety for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League(NFL) for four seasons. He played college football for the University of Miami, was a member of the Hurricanes' 2001 BCS National Championship team, and earned unanimous-All American honors. The Washington Redskins chose Taylor with the fifth overall pick of the 2004 NFL Draft. Due to his ferocious hits, several of his Redskins teammates nicknamed him "Meast," a portmanteau word from the expression "half man, half beast."

Taylor died at the age of 24 on November 27, 2007, from critical injuries from a gunshot by intruders at his Miami area home. His death led to an outpouring of national support and sympathy, especially in the Washington area, where Taylor had been a fan favorite as a Redskin, and the Miami area, where Taylor had starred for the Miami Hurricanes, after leading Gulliver Prep to a Florida state high school championship and setting a state record for most touchdowns in a season (44).

In honor of Taylor, on the first play of the first game after he was murdered, the Redskins defense lined up with only 10 players which left the area Taylor lined up at free safety open against the Buffalo Bills.

D'Ante Yarborough remains quick strike threat

D'Ante Yarborough breaks away against the Langley
Saxons in the Bulldogs semi final regional win.
ASHBURN - Stone Bridge Bulldog wide receiver D'Ante Yarborough is just one of many weapons Coach Mickey Thompson can throw at opponents. The Bulldog offense led by Stanford recruit Ryan Burns has used the quick strike threat of Yarborough .
"At first I didn't think I would be one of Ryan's [Burns] main recievers." Yarborough said, "We built that connection through practice and just made sure every pass and throw was the best pass and throw."

With other weapons on the Bulldog offense such as Sterling Dailey, Rassaun Goldring, Jimmy Higgins, Christian Strahin and Jake Kuzbel opposing coaches have trouble trying to gameplan for such an explosive offense.

The junior wide receiever scored 3 times in Fridays regional championship with a run of 40 yards and receptions of 20 and 90 yards from Ryan Burns.

Football: Stone Bridge Storms Back for 69-50 Win Over Yorktown to Claim 8th Regional Title by Dan Sousa

Stone Bridge Coach Mickey Thompson prepares for
Yorktown   Photo by Moe Murphy / Clarke County Sports
Ashburn (Nov. 24, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School football coach Mickey Thompson was asked over and over again after Friday's Northern Region Division 5 title game if he was worried his Bulldogs had fallen too far behind Yorktown in the match-up of unbeaten teams.
When it was 16-7 Yorktown after the second Stone Bridge first half turnover? Nope

When it was 23-7 Yorktown after the third Stone Bridge first half turnover? Nope

Surely, when it was 29-7 Yorktown with 9:30 still to play in the first half and Stone Bridge having committed four turnovers!?!

Ah, again, Nope.

Thompson did wonder when his team was going to start showing their true colors in front of the sunshine-lit late November crowd.

Raiders top rival Huskies to earn first region final trip since 1996 by Carl Lukat

LEESBURG-Loudoun County High School could not have envisioned a better start to its Region II Division 4 semifinal game against neighborhood rival Tuscarora Nov. 16 in Leesburg.

Stone Bridge Wins the Battle of Champions
“Eagles Valiant Comeback Falls Short”

By Michael "Moe" Murphy
Special to the Loudoun Times-Mirror

ASHBURN, VA  Nov. 11, 2003 – When the Bulldogs and Eagles took the field Saturday there was magic in the air. Both teams sporting 11-0 perfect records, each team a champion of their respective district. The Region II Division 4 Championship was on the line. Over 6000 fans traveled to Ashburn on a bright sunny day. The Bulldogs were dealt a blow early when senior captain Landon Gouveia went down in front of the Bulldog bench at the 10:22 mark of the 1st period. He would sit out the rest of the game and left the field on crutches. “It’s a high ankle sprain,” said Gouveia as he entered the locker room, “I hope to be back for our next game. Our guys did a great job, they stepped up when they had to, my hats off to all of them, and they played great.” Shortly after the injury, Stone Bridge mounted an 80-yard drive that consumed just over 7 minutes; twice Stone Bridge converted on 4th down and was capped when Mike O’Brien went in on 4 down from the 2. Stephen Eaton added the extra point and Stone bridge led 7-0 with 1:42 to go in the 1st quarter.
B
Bulldog Mike O'Brien throws to Rick Calloway
Stone Bridge got their 2nd score with 9:37 in the 2nd quarter; O’Brien hit Rick Calloway on a fade to the left corner of the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good and the Bulldogs led 14-0. Stone bridge forced a quick Liberty punt, with the Eagle’s punting out of their end zone, the Bulldogs quickly put another score on the board when Mike O’Brien capped a drive by going in from 2 yards out. O’Brien for the day was 12 for 31 with 160 yards passing, with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He also had 45 yards on 17 carries and 2 scores. After the Eaton conversion, the 21-0 score had Bulldog fans cautiously optimistic and Eagle fans wondering what was going on. Liberty did not give up and started moving the ball late in the quarter, an impressive drive ended on 4th down at the Stone Bridge 19 yard line with 1:38 to go in the half. The half would end 21-0 in favor of Stone Bridge.

VA Tech Bound Ed Wang Eyes Syracuse
bound A.J. Brown in the Region II Championship
Liberty came out with vengeance in the 2nd half. The defense forced Stone Bridge to 3 and out with some ferocious hitting. Senior captain and Syracuse bound A.J. Brown put Liberty on the board early in the quarter when he broke around right end and raced 66 yards for the Eagles first score with 10:17 to go in the 3rd. Brown would score twice on the day and would lead all rushers with 160 yards on 21 carries. When asked about the halftime locker room talk Brown said “Our coach told us we could fold it up, or go out and play, he told us about his team coming back from 21 in a high school playoff game, we knew what we had to do, our defense came out and set the tone.” The attempt for 2 points failed. The Eagles mounted their 2nd scoring drive and quarterback Nick Monaco went in on 4th and 1 to pull the Eagles to within 9 at 21-12. Once again the extra point failed and with 3:55 to go in the 3rd quarter, Liberty was back in the game. Adrian Hull intercepted a Mike O’Brien pass to give the ball back to the Eagles with 50 seconds to go in the 3rd quarter. Momentum had clearly shifted over to Liberty. After another successful drive, Brown went in from 9 yards for his 2nd score, and with Malik’s extra point, the Eagles had scored 19 unanswered points and were within 2 at 21-19.

BLUEMONT, VA- (Nov.10, 2012)  One of the Washington metro area leading rusher's season came to an abrupt end last night as the Virginia High School League football playoffs started.

Woodgrove junior running back Joshua Sweet was injured in the first half of the Wolverines 36-7 loss to the Loudoun County Raiders at Raider Field in Leesburg. Sweet left the game with a separated shoulder and did not return.

Sweet rushed for 4 carries gaining 17 yards to end his season with 1,727 yards on 252 carries with 25 touchdowns.

Following this weekend's playoff games Sweet ranks 3rd in rushing yardage in the Washington Post's All Met Leader standings behind Northwestern's Darius Victor (1,787) and Robinson's Joe Wilson (2,358).

Josh Sweet ran for 297 yards and 6 touchdowns against
Potomac Falls this season. Photo by Moe Murphy C.C.S.

Sweet ranks 4th in touchdowns with 25, and trails only Chase Powell, Wise (26), Darius Victor, Northwestern (26) and Joe Wilson, Robinson (32).

Sweet's 252 carries ranks 3rd behind Philip Mun, Langley (275) and Joe Wilson, Robinson (336).

Sweet rushed for over 200 yards 3 times and had his best game in week 3 against Potomac Falls, carrying the ball 32 times for 297 yards and 6 touchdowns to pace the Wolverines.

The other 2 coming against Dominion, 32 carries for 253 yards and 3 scores, and a 5 touchdown game against Heritage with 212 yards on 32 carries.

Sweet's biggest game, however came last week when the Wolverines defeated the Loudoun Valley Vikings in the "Battle for the Ville".

After senior quarterback Tucker Coil left in the first quarter with a broken leg, Sweet shouldered the load and helped lead the Wolverines to a win scoring the winning touchdown with 37 seconds to go.

Sweet will no doubt go into next season as one of the DC Metro area's top backs and will do his part to lead the Wolverines back to the playoffs.

Josh Sweets game by game statistics can be found at the following link. Josh Sweet 2012 Stats
